I Fell In Love With A Restaurant
By Giovani Saintiny
If you Google Shopsins General Store, you'll be told it's at Essex Street Market, and I'll take Google's word for it. Recently, I heard it was no more. Then, I heard of the book with--I presume--fabulous soup recipes from this very odd restaurant. I hear everyone's on MySpace, except Eve, who--to me--IS Shopsins General Store. All I know is that, from the moment I stepped into the old 63 Bedford Street location and saw toys all over the heavy dark wooden tables and heard old time radio at play, I knew that I had come home. And, when I invited the unheralded prince of microtonality, Marc Jones, to taste Shopsins' orgasm pie (Oh, right. They called it mud cake or something), Eve laid down the law. "You boys can't have cake. You haven't had your supper." And, you didn't argue with that! Which is why I've got the unmitigated gall to think of Eve as Shopsins rather than Kenny--who cooked everything, pretty much! Wow! You did NOT cross Kenny! He would put you in your place! But, the place was nothing but a factory of edible love. I'm living in San Antonio, Texas, now. Far away from whatever version, whatever trace, is left of that NYC landmark. The kids don't need the tables to do their homework, and the toys on all the tables must merely be decorations, now. If they're still strewn about. This place had the longest soup menu I have ever seen! And, knowing Kenny--even the "abbreviated menu" is probably as daunting as ever. And, as long as he feels like it--there'll always be a Shopsins. |
