Stock Market Info: What Are Stock Futures?

It's a strange name for a product, isn't it? A stock future? Sounds a little like time travel--and given the desire to perceive the coming value of any type of stock, a consciousness beyond the mundane is always involved. However, stock futures are more stable in their value than what are normally thought of as shares of stock. Why is that? When you buy stock, you usually think of yourself buying a general share in a business. When you buy stock futures, though, you're coming very close to simply buying a commodity. Not, so much, the wine company as the grapes (which are the underlying value). You're paying the cost of the grapes, plus the cost of carying that value (usually figured as a percentage of said value). The value of futures, therefore, tends to be less volatile than the value of regular stock. It's got more to do with actual value and a lot less to do with the every-changing mood of the market. That, in general, is the difference between "regular" stock and stock futures. |
